2017 Grantees Named

March 31st, 2017

WFO approved specific funding for 11 applications for total grant awards of $44,000. Awards include one comprehensive university, six regional campuses, four community colleges, and two campus branches.  Four of the campuses have received prior WFO grants, and five are new applications; the other two have applied in the past but not been funded. The criteria for recommending these 11 awards was the school's focus on providing supports (advice/counseling, mentoring, referral/guidance, serving as advocates, specific materials and/or assistance) for single mother students and the proposed program’s ability for broad impact on a significant number of students.  The recommendations came with the understanding that the campuses may provide the same and/or similar services to all single parents, regardless of gender.

  • $4,000 to East Central University (Ada) to expand their Tiger Moms support network, single mothers retreat each semester, and add two group study breakfast meetings during finals week.

  • $5,000 to Oklahoma City Community College to expand current services into a wraparound model to address non-cognitive barriers of single mother students including increased inclusion and collaboration by both Enrollment/Student Services and Academic Affairs.  Activities include educational sessions and new student orientation specific to single mothers on the main campus with in-kind staff support.
  • $5,000 to Oklahoma State Institute of Technology (Okmulgee) to hold a single mothers summit, establish a Single Parent Resource Network, and expand their concierge service matrix.  Single Parent Task Force established in 2015 researched needs, created survey, and based proposed activities on those findings.
